What is the best beach in Cascais? A beach guide (and how to swim from the boat)

Equipa Lusitana Boat · June 26, 2026

What is the best beach in Cascais? The honest answer is: it depends on what you’re looking for. Cascais ranges from small coves of golden sand, sheltered and family-friendly, to the wild Atlantic of Guincho. In this guide we walk through the main beaches — the history and character of each — and explain the best way to get to know them all: from the water, diving straight off the boat.

A little context: Cascais started out as a fishing village and turned elegant when, from 1870 onwards, the Portuguese royal family chose it as a summer retreat. The court and the aristocracy followed — and it’s that blend of sea, sand and history that you can still feel on every beach today.

Praia da Conceição and Praia da Duquesa

These are the two beaches at the heart of Cascais bay, side by side and almost merging into one. Fine golden sand, calm and sheltered water, terraces a step away and the train station right there. Conceição is the natural continuation of Duquesa (whose name comes from its link to the dukes who once owned property there). They are the most practical and family-friendly beaches — ideal for a relaxed day, with serene waters.

Praia da Rainha

Small, tucked between rocks and very photogenic, Praia da Rainha is the hidden gem of central Cascais. It’s said to owe its name to Rainha D. Amélia, who is said to have chosen it for her swims back when the court summered in Cascais. You go down by steps and, at low tide, it gains more sand. Intimate and protected — the choice for those after a secluded, charming spot.

Praia da Ribeira (dos Pescadores), in the heart of Cascais

Praia da Ribeira (dos Pescadores)

This is the original beach of Cascais: Praia da Ribeira, or dos Pescadores (the Fishermen’s beach), is where the colourful boats still rest on the sand, in the historic centre, beside the bay and the marina. It’s not the beach for a long day on a towel, but it’s the most authentic — the place where the village was born and where you feel the fishing soul of Cascais, among the old houses and the smell of sea air.

Praia do Tamariz (Estoril)

Already in Estoril, joined to Cascais by the seafront promenade, Praia do Tamariz is the classic, elegant beach of the Line. Shaped by the Belle Époque era and the proximity of the Casino and the Estoril gardens, it has the famous saltwater tank (the ocean pool) at one end. Good for a swim with history and a stylish late afternoon.

Praia de Carcavelos (the surf beach)

On the way to Lisbon, on the Cascais coastline (Linha de Cascais), Praia de Carcavelos is the area’s biggest stretch of sand and the region’s surf capital: steady waves, several surf schools and a young, lively vibe. At one end stands the imposing Forte de São Julião da Barra, Portugal’s largest sea fortress. It’s the beach for those who want space, waves and a surf lesson — more open and energetic water than the sheltered coves of Cascais bay.

Praia do Guincho (the wild one)

On the opposite side, facing the open ocean, is Guincho: dunes, wind, waves and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park all around. It’s the beach of surfers and the wild Atlantic — spectacular to look at, but exposed and with rough seas. We mention it here because it’s the “other face” of Cascais; we sail and anchor mainly in the sheltered coves of the bay, where the water is calm and swimming is safe.

So, what is the best beach in Cascais?

It depends on you:

  • For families and calm seas — Conceição and Duquesa.
  • For a romantic, photogenic spot — Praia da Rainha.
  • To feel the authentic Cascais — Praia da Ribeira (dos Pescadores).
  • For class and history — Praia do Tamariz, in Estoril.
  • For surf and a big sandy beach — Praia de Carcavelos.
  • For waves and wild nature — Praia do Guincho.

And there’s one answer that brings together the best of them all: see them from the water.

Swimming from the boat: the best way to experience them

The truth is that the beaches of Cascais are even better seen from the sea — no crowds, no hunting for a spot on the sand, with the whole coast in front of you. Aboard the Lusitana we do exactly that: we sail along the bay, anchor in a sheltered cove and you dive straight off the catamaran into clean, calm water, with the beach right there in front of you.

Swimming off the catamaran, in a cove on the Cascais coast

The catamaran is stable and easy for getting in and out of the water, there’s a swim platform and you can add snorkelling. This is Sail & Swim: a trip that combines sailing, a stop for a swim and — if you like — dining on board at sunset. For the full route to the bay, see also the boat trip from Lisbon to Cascais.

Frequently asked questions

So what really is the best beach in Cascais? There isn’t a single one: for calm seas and families, Conceição and Duquesa; for a romantic spot, Praia da Rainha; for authenticity, dos Pescadores (Ribeira); for class, Tamariz (Estoril); for waves, Guincho. The best way to compare them is to see them from the water.

Can you swim in the sea from the boat? Yes. We anchor in a sheltered cove and you dive straight off the catamaran, into calm water, with a swim platform and the crew’s support. Snorkelling can be added.

Do the Cascais beaches have calm seas? The bay beaches (Conceição, Duquesa, Rainha, Ribeira) are sheltered and generally calm. Guincho is the opposite — open Atlantic, with wind and waves. We sail mainly in the sheltered coves.

Which is the most beautiful Cascais beach for photos? Praia da Rainha, with its cove tucked into the rocks, is one of the most photogenic. Seen from the sea, at sunset, it looks even better.
